Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is one of the main causes of excessive-evaporative dry eye, accounting for 60%-70% of dry eye patients.

MGD is a chronic or diffuse meibomian gland disease mainly characterized by obstruction of the meibomian gland terminal duct and abnormal quality or quantity of meibomian lipid secretion. Clinically, it can cause tear film abnormality and ocular surface inflammation, resulting in ocular irritation, which may damage the cornea and affect visual function in severe cases.
